STORY:   B-

A great premise that loses steam.

PEOPLE:   B

The Minions feel right at home in the silent era.

FILM NERD STUFF:   B

Allusions aplenty for film nerds.

ONE BIG LESSON:   C

If your dream is big enough, you don’t need to follow the crowd.

FINAL COMMENTS:

If it wasn’t obvious before seeing them inserted into grainy black and white footage of dozens of classic cinematic moments, the Minions are top-level silent movie stars. They revel in all things physical and slapstick. And—unlike in this movie’s plot—their trademark bumbling gibberish makes the hijinks even more amusing.

It seems unfair to cast an overly critical eye over this film. Minions are going to Minion, and for the fans, that’s likely enough. Kids likely won’t notice how the film’s energy sags halfway through. Film buff-parents will find the copious references useful as a starting point for their kids’ film education.

FINAL GRADE:   B-
