THE ACTOR AWARDS
Click on the pic below to watch Beau and Kevin break down the results of this year’s Actor Awards (SAG) and how they will influence the Oscars race.
BIGGEST MOMENTS:
Michael B. Jordan wins Best Actor over Timothee Chalamet.
Harrison Ford’s montage and speech for his Lifetime Achievement award.
A standing ovation for Catherine O’Hara’s posthumous victory.
OSCAR EFFECTS:
If One Battle After Another had won ensemble, the race for Best Picture would be over. Sinners’ win last night might make it a true race. Historically, the winner at The Actor Awards goes on to win Oscar’s big prize 50% of the time. Will that trend continue, now with a Best Casting category that seems to correlate more closely with the spirit of “Best Ensemble”? We shall see.
My first thought was that Jordan and Chalamet is now a coin flip for Best Actor. But I can’t shake a new scenario that’s sprung up in my head. Maybe Jordan steals a number of votes from Chalamet as a result of last night’s upset, leaving a big enough dent in Chalamet’s lead to lift Wagner Moura to victory? Moura’s incredible performance is sure to get a lot of votes, and the Academy’s international membership has never been higher (Moura hails from Brazil and was not in competition last night). I think it’s definitely something to watch for.
Jessie Buckley, start writing your speech.
Sean Penn may seem like a lock after picking up a BAFTA and an Actor in the last week. But remember this: according to many, Stellan Skarsgard is still the frontrunner. He and Penn were not in direct competition with each other at The Actors.
Supporting Actress was (and still is) the most wide open acting race of the year. This win (and the most whimsical, charming speech of the night) may have pushed Madigan ahead by a nose after she, Teyana Taylor, and Wunmi Mosaku split the CCA, Golden Globe, and BAFTA respectively. But Madigan is Weapon’s only nominee, and that has historically been a steep hurdle to overcome at the Oscars. This race promises to be the biggest nail-biter of the night.
