The Furious is playing in theaters at the time of review. Rated R. Common Sense says 16+

A father (Miao Xie) fights fiercely against ruthless kidnappers to save his abducted daughter.

STORY: C-

Not much of a narrative, but fans of the film likely won’t mind.

PEOPLE: B

Miao Xie and Jon Taslim make a memorable (and lethal) odd couple.

FILM NERD STUFF: A+

Creative choreography makes the fight scenes unforgettable.

ONE BIG LESSON: C

Revenge is a dish best served at hyperkinetic speed, with a side of chaos.

FINAL COMMENTS:

Fans of the genre will find plenty to cheer for, particularly the epic, extended final battle. The acting is great, and the choreography is stunning. The plot is quickly becoming a tired trope in these revenge flicks — one preview had the exact same one. That lack of narrative spark and the excessive violence provide little reason for people who aren’t fans of the genre to tune in.

In other words: if this movie looks like your jam, it won’t disappoint. If it’s not, leave that jam in the jar.

FINAL GRADE: B
